Please join us for the opening reception of "Views of the Village" a unique look at Yellow Springs on January 9th, 2015, at the Village Artisans from 6-8 pm. This collection of art pieces was created by The Yellow Springs High School Advanced/AP Studio Art Classes.

This exhibit is part of their PBL project.  Project goals are: taking on the role of a professional artist, create high quality artwork, work together to create a successful and professional exhibition, and raise money for the Advanced and AP Art Classes at the High School.

Baby It's Cold Outside.

The gallery at the Village Artisans cooperative, 100 Corry Street, features a special holiday show of its artists’ work throughout December, “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” including items by new members, Scott Stolsenberg and Jo Ettorre. The gallery will host an open house on Saturday, December 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. For more information, call (937) 767-1209

Diamonds are Delightful - Final Days

Our community show Diamonds are Delightful  is in it's final days.  Thank you  to all of the artists that participated.

Meet Jo Ettorre

Jo(anna) Ettorre has been exploring fiber art as a knitweaver for two decades, and fiber as an expressive medium for a lifetime.  “It’s how I quiet a chatty mind, and practice listening and feeling for harmony.”  Along with crochet, needle felting, and dyeing, knitweaving tapestries is the culmination of those years, coming full circle recently from her wearable art accessories.   

A Cleveland native, Jo claims her favorite inspirations on Lake Erie, “anywhere I can see the water”, and Dawes Arboretum, a spectacular celebration of Nature in Licking County.  “I imagine the world being created one thread at a time, and look to Nature for how it was done.  Creating a base image with knitweaving at the loom, I can take the next stage out into Nature, and embellish a piece sitting among the trees or by the lake.  Portable work has been invaluable during the years I was raising my son, and it became a favorite part of how I finish tapestries that are truly collaborations with the natural world.”  

Originally trained in law, Jo is a self-educated artist, who acknowledges the gifts of  a long list of teachers that deepened her skills over a lifetime.  “I am  grateful to Village Artisans for expanding my horizons when I was a co-op member in 2001-2, and I’m very excited to return to the gallery this year.

Meet Scott Stolsenberg

Scott Stolsenberg is a local photographer in Yellow Springs.

He grew up in Washington Court House and has loved art as far back as he can remember. Scott studied art all through high school and college, exploring many different media including paint, pen and ink, pencil sketching and zinc plate etchings. After College he focused more on photography. In 2002, the Record Herald, a newspaper in Washington Court House, started publishing his photos. After that beginning, Scott’s work began appearing in the Trip Ohio travel magazine, Salt magazine, and the Fayette County publication, Spectrum. He spent two years working as a photographer and photo editor for Art of Photography photo studio in Washington Court House.

While he has loved all these different types of photography, Scott has always loved nature photography the most. His work showcases many places but he is especially fond of the Hocking Hills and Yellow Springs area.             

                 

For Scott, photography is his way to explore the world around him. There are nuances and details that can be missed with the naked eye. When capturing a bird, insect, flower or even a cloud within a photo, the opportunity is there to study it and admire it in even greater detail. “I always hope that people will look at my work and see things they have not noticed before, “ says Scott. “It is important for people to find connections to the world around them. Only then will they work to protect it.”       

As for how he learned photography, Scott has this to say, “I have not had much formal training. I learned most of what I know from self-study and the wonderful photographers who have shared their time and knowledge with me. In turn, I love to share what I have learned with others. Everyone has something to share and I learn something new each time I interact with another artist.”

We are challenging artists create two or three dimensional art in a diamond shape or with diamonds as a theme. (Literally or figuratively, let you brain go wild!)

Artisans out and about

The 2014 Art on the Lawn was a huge success.  This was our largest turn out for artists since becoming a juried show.  The weather was fantastic. We had a steady crowd of shoppers, good food, and music.  A big thank you to everyone that came out and supported the event. (Look out for more info and photos in a forthcoming post.) 

While most of the Village Artisans members are still recuperating from last weekend's big event, our own Kathy Moulton has been busy as a bee getting ready for special solo event opening this Friday at the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery.  There's a reception August 15th from 6-9, followed by a special Children's reception on Saturday August 16th from 1-4pm.  The Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery is located right across the street from Village Artisans. This is a show about whimsy and color and poetry and the growth of a deeply creative woman. This show features Kathy’s 5 charming picture books but it could also be a show about Textile Art, Painting or Drawing.
Kathy has always loved storybooks, Walt Disney, coloring books and cartoons. As a young woman, in amongst sewing and painting and drawing, she started creating stories. Along the way she received from many people the gifts of encouragement and the knowledge of how to plan and plot a story. More life and more years passed and more poems came into her head. During these years she married, had children, did her art and learned how to be a draftsman, drawing house plans for local builders, using a computer and AutoCAD. She began to wonder about the possibility of painting on a computer. As with so many of the arts she had mastered, Kathy just figured it out.
“I went back to the rhyme I had begun so long ago about shoes and socks. I worked and reworked the poem and then planned and plotted my characters and drew my drawings. I scanned them into my computer. Even though I wasn't even sure of what I was doing, I managed to paint "You Have to Get All of Your Toes In" on my Mac. I had figured out this wonderful way of painting, with endless colors and layers for characters and scenery.”
Kathy Verner Moulton is an artist, author and illustrator. Like everything else she has mastered, when she decided to publish her books, with the help of her husband, she taught herself how to self publish. So far she has written and illustrated and published five children’s books. She has also created over 60 images of Yellow Springs that are included in her published book, “My Town ~ the Muses of a Not So Vocal Local”. The work is hand drawn and/or drawn on computer and then painted digitally. Born in Detroit, Michigan and then transplanted several times, she finally rooted in Yellow Springs and has lived there most of her life. Working in many areas of art, her focus lately has been on picture books.

Hot Fun in the Summertime

How Does Your Garden Grow --Art Stroll reception

Be sure to come out this Friday from 6-9 for the Yellow Springs Summer Art Stroll. 

We will be having a reception for our current Lobby Show "How Does Your Garden Grow?"

We'll be serving light refreshments and some of the co-op artisans will be on hand to to talk about their work. We hope you'll  stop by and join us for the the fun.

Lowell -- The Miracle Worker

Recently our mixed media artisan Nancy Mellon decided to challenge to our wood turner Lowell Converse. She gave him a kitchen knife that she had received as a wedding present many years ago. It had seen better days certainly, but this was her "go to" knife and leave it to Lowell to breathe new life into a beloved everyday item and make it beautiful.

Artisans Out and About -- Color and Light -- Libby Rudolf

From March 11 through the end of April, the Winds Café will host an exhibition by Libby Rudolf, "

Watercolors: Color and Light." There will be a reception for the artist at the Winds on March 30 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.  The exhibition is in honor of Vanessa, Libby’s sister-in-law who died last year, and twenty percent of art sale proceeds will go to Dayton Children’s Hospital. Libby is a member of the VillageArtisans co-op in Yellow Springs.

Open Community Art Show at Village Artisans

"March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb". As the members of Village

Artisans were discussing themes for their next Open Community Art Show, they

wondered how many different ways the very creative artists of Yellow Springs could

interpret this phrase in their work?

The challenge to all community artists is to express your vision of “The Lion and The

Lamb” in a piece of 2 or 3 dimensional work for the March/April exhibit in the Village

Artisans Lobby Gallery. All are invited to use your imagination and become part of the

next gallery show. The spring theme may be interpreted broadly.

The deadline for entries is March 1, 2014. Entry forms will be available at Village

Artisans, 100 Corry Street. They may also be found at the Arts Council Gallery,

Unfinished Creations and online at www.shopvillageartisans.com. A $10.00 entry fee is

requested and there is a 15% commission for any sold pieces.

Village Artisans will host an Artist Reception on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 6-9 pm.

There will be refreshments and fun. Exhibitors, their friends and family and the entire

community is invited to view the artwork and share snacks and a good time.
