Meet Mark David Holbrook

Mark was born in rural southern Ohio in a small sliver of the state falls in Appalachia. Even though he moved to the Dayton area as a child he always maintained contact with his roots and culture.

Mark is a 1983 Graduate of Vandalia Butler and has spent the bulk of his working career as a retail banker. There have been detours with education and certification as a Hypnotherapist & Reflexologist.

Mark started sculpting in his style as a stress relief and response to the rigid confines of the banking environment. With a downsizing, he simply decided to “Go for it.”

He has nurtured a side of himself that was suppressed for a long while. The love of color and abstract ideas can be found in both his sculpture and pottery.

Mark currently resides in Troy Ohio with his husband of 25+ years, Richard.

You can see more of his work on-line at www.davidholbrookcreations.com.

34th Annual Art on the Lawn

34th Annual “Art on the Lawn” (presented by Village Artisans)

WHEN: Saturday, August 12, 2017, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

WHERE: On the grounds of Mills Lawn School, 200 S. Walnut Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio

Yellow Springs, Ohio’s popular August festival of art, music and food – is in its thirty-third year. This year more than 100 artists from all over Ohio and beyond will gather under the shade trees at Mills Lawn School in the heart of Yellow Springs to show and sell their artwork. The event will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017, from 10 am to 5 pm; it is free and open to the public.

New and returning artists will present paintings, drawings, ceramics, fiber art, garden art, glass, jewelry, paper crafts, photography, candles, leather and more. Food vendors and live music will complement the outstanding artwork. The event is sponsored by Village Artisans, a multi-media artist cooperative in Yellow Springs.

Art on the Lawn's returning, featured artist this year is Peggy Schuning, a mixed media, mosaic artist from Cincinnati who primarily works in slate. Peggy won Best of Show at the 2016 Art on the Lawn. Schuning said she studied at Miami (of Ohio) University as an art teacher. She decided not to remain in the teaching profession and when she pursued stained glass a bit she found that “creating mosaics was a better fit for me as I enjoyed working with broken and discarded pieces.”

In 2014, the Preble County Art Association commissioned a sensory wall for a handicapped accessible playground in Eaton, OH. Schuning realized she "needed to learn a lot more" to be able to complete this project so she attended the 2014 Society of Mosaic Artists Conference, training under Isaiah Zagar, a mosaic artist who has created exterior mosaics all over South Philadelphia. Also at this conference Schuning found other like-minded people who pursued mosaics as an art. “I haven't looked back since.”

Schuning continues her mosaic training and has learned from internationally known mosaic artists. Art on the Lawn last year was actually the first juried art show she had ever applied to. At the show, she brought pieces from two workshops she had recently attended and was surprised when her slate pieces sold out. “Art on the Lawn was a pivotal turning point for me and my work," she said. "I've since obtained a studio space at Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati and won more awards at art shows. My mosaic piece entitled Unbroken, Uncovered, Undone, received an award at the Mosaic Arts International show in Detroit this year."

The beautiful hand-made work of Peggy Schuning and over 100 other artists, can be seen at the August 12th Art on the Lawn in Yellow Springs.

For more information on the show or on Village Artisans, please visit the gallery at 100 Corry Street in Yellow Springs, call 937-767-1209, email villageartisans.email@yahoo.com, or go to the web site: www.villageartisans.blogspot.com. Call for Artists: The Up-Cycled Art Show

We are inviting Community members to get really creative and make a piece for our “Up-Cycled Art Show.”

What is Up-Cycled art? It's art made by taking something that is not typically thought of as art material and using it by itself or in combination with traditional art materials and techniques to make a piece of art.

Create your masterpiece by finding something you would normally throw away, recycle, or something you found or that is not typically considered an art material and let your creativity go to work. Look around you, there are so many inspirational materials, shapes, colors, textures and objects just waiting to become part of your art!

The piece should be no larger 18 x 24 inches. Artwork may be two- or three-dimensional. All work should be framed and ready to hang or be ready for display, a wire across the back of framed art works best with our hanging system

$10 for the first piece and $5 for additional pieces. Submit art between Aug 25-29. More details about how to enter and the entry form can be found here.

Meet Carol Culbertson

Carol Culbertson is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of some or at least she would like to believe that! At present, her focus in art is weaving and pottery. With a basement studio for pottery and a living room filled with looms, she spends her days tinkering and perfecting her craft. She has spent over 20 years bettering her throwing skills and over 5 years understanding the weft and warps of weaving. She appreciates the opportunity to be a maker and color, texture and nature are themes which run through and around her art.

She live on a small lot in the country with a bubbling cool creek, a beautiful soggy wetlands, and a newly planted prairie. She leads the simple life and enjoys walking her dogs Barley and Miss Maybe on the bike path each day. Other pursuits which fill up her time are knitting, spinning wool, gardening, hiking, traveling, biking and improving her birding skills (although she feels this may be a hopeless endeavor). She will always choose to be outside observing and listening to nature rather than inside cleaning her house!

You can view some of Carol's work at www.CCulbertson.com.

Meet Tara Anderson

Tara currently resides in Wilberforce, Ohio with her husband, three kids, three cats and two dogs. She was honored to attend the Governor’s School for the Arts in Kentucky in the '90s, moved to Ohio, and eventually graduated with a BFA in Painting from Ohio University. While she occasionally paints large-scale signs for local businesses, most of her current work is focused on wheel-thrown ceramic sculpture and jewelry made in the basement studio in her home.

Her work was featured in the Spring 2015 Issue of Reverie Fair Magazine. More recently, she showed in the 2016 Christmas Gift Gallery at the Dayton Visual Arts Center. She regularly participates as a vendor in local Ohio events such as the Yellow Springs Street Fair and Art on the Lawn.

Never at a loss for ideas, her work is inspired by her children, nature, math, steampunk, goth, punk, language, literature, industry, music and the desire to create a beautiful, useful pot in a style that has never been seen before.
