Artisans Out and About

Two of our artisans have teamed up for a special exhibit at The Winds Cafe entitled Color & Light: Brush & Needle.

From now until the end of June, you can find work from our water colorist, Libby Rudolf and our quilter, Pam Geisel.

When planning this exhibition  Pam suggested to that Libby make a painting of someone quilting, while Pam created a quilt of someone painting.  So they did just that. As it turns out Pam's quilt, She Paints With Fabric is 500th Quilt.

There will be an Artist Reception Sunday, May 15th from 4:30 - 6:30. If you can't make then, you have until June 30th to check out the show. 

Meet Christine Klinger

Mixed Media – Painting/Photography/Sculpture

Christine’s art interests are many and varied. She started her visual art career in photography, making primarily documentary/photojournalism and Nature images (later writing and photographing for newspapers, and teaching). “I like to make photographs of Nature – human and otherwise,” she says. 

 Christine then spent about 10 years diving into (and later teaching) clay sculpture. “I had been searching for a medium that was more tangible, tactile – and clay met that need completely.”

These days Christine may do or teach either photography or sculpture: “I make photographs often and I occasionally sculpt.  Although,” she adds, “my current obsession is painting.” And when she paints, as expected, Christine has a couple of different styles. “I may make expressionistic abstracts at times, and more impressionistic, plein air landscapes at other times. Some say I have a short attention span, which is probably true, but I simply like to make art when and how the mood strikes me. I follow my bliss.”  

Besides making art, Christine was coordinator of Rosewood Gallery in Kettering, OH, for many years, and former owner of Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs. She and her husband Jim are residents of Yellow Springs. Jim Klinger is a musician, potter, sculptor, and sometimes teacher. Dare 2B a Little Square

The Village Artisans Gallery, 100 Cory Street in Yellow Springs, is pleased to announce a spring exhibition: Dare 2B a Little Square: An Open Community Art Exhibit, a show in which local artists created art within a 6” by 6” square (2D and/or 3D). The show will run from April 11 through May 27, and a reception for the artists will take place at the Gallery on Friday, April 15, between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m.

Meet Nicki Strouss

Nicki Strouss enjoys creating both functional and sculptural work. Her vessels reference figures and possibility. These forms are narrative and reference objects caught in an evolutionary trajectory to or from a time and place of baskets, cups or paintings. Reference to function is evident because many of the forms are utilitarian. The repetition of form is my way of understanding each shape or idea in a new medium or combination. Mediums used include high fire clay, wool, paper, wax, and any number of other household implements to create a rich surface that is best experienced when held in hand. The decision to use a variety of materials and process helps vary and enforce the experience and interpretation of the repeated forms and at the same time enhance the visual and physical texture of the pieces. Some forms appear fragile, as if cracking eggs and others look as strong as weathered stones. As containers for thoughts or food, I hope these objects find a happy place to enliven your home.

   Nicki grew up on a horse farm in Lexington, KY and is now home in Columbus after graduating from Columbus College of Art and Design, and earning her 200 RYT from Grow Yoga. She continues to work with local artists and various other learning institutions and teaches ceramics at Columbus Academy, CCAD, and the Craft Museum. She is also a yoga instructor at Balanced Yoga. Other interest and inspiration are from slow food, the outdoors, traveling, and sharing knowledge.

Community Exhibit -- Artists Wanted

Dare to 2B Square is back, this time with a twist!  Call for Artists: Spring Exhibition: Dare 2B a Little Square.

The Village Artisans Gallery, 100 Cory Street in Yellow Springs, invites community artists to submit entries for a spring exhibition: Dare 2B a Little Square: An Open Community Art Exhibit. All local artists are invited to create art within a 6” by 6” square (2D and/or 3D) and submit their entries by April 4. The show will run from April 11 through May 27, and a reception for the artists will take place at the Gallery on Friday, April 15, between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m..

YSHS Opening

We had a fantastic turn our at last night's opening for the Yellow Springs High School Art Students. Thank you to all that came out.

Who knows maybe one day we'll see art work by one of these young artists hanging our gallery in the future.

If you weren't able to make it, the student's show will be up through the month of February.
